Report summary
On 31 March 2008, Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) signed a US$150 million contract with Excelerate Energy to build an LNG import facility at the port of Mina Al-Ahmadi which became operation in August 2009 The newly-built FSRU Golar Igloo replaced Excelerate's vessel in March 2014. The unit was moored at the terminal between March and December when gas demand was at its highest. LNG volumes were unloaded from conventional tankers onto the FSRU in port, via a fixed ship-to-ship transfer system. The volumes were then regasified on the FSRU and transported via pipeline to the capital to feed power plants and water desalination facilities during periods of peak demand. The FSRU left the terminal in 2022 due to the start of the giant Al-Zour LNG import terminal in 2021.
