Report summary
Summary of Canadian coal supply covering export and domestic thermal coal and metallurgical coal. The report also covers Canadian coal production, mine costs and infrastructure. Canada’s coal supply remains below pre-COVID levels, with no near-term recovery expected due to environmental policies and economic constraints. Total production fell to 46.4 Mt in 2024, driven by a 15% drop in thermal coal. Alberta’s coal phase-out cut coal-fired generation. Production is forecast to dip to 44.3 Mt in 2025, then rise to 55 Mt by the late 2020s via metallurgical coal exports. EVR led 2024 output with 26.5 Mt; Glencore acquired 77% of EVR. Conuma’s output fell due to mine closures but may rebound with Quintette and Peace River assets. Canada exported 30.5 Mt of met coal in 2024. Thermal coal continues to decline, with Genesee mine closure marking Alberta’s transition. Costs are projected at C$134.3/t in 2025, with met coal at C$164.7/t due to royalties, labour, and inflation.
